West Point Military AcademyTour, Friday, July 2

We drove to West Point Military Academy today, only about 40 minutes from our campground. The temperature is about 80◦ with a nice breeze and blue, blue skies, the perfect day for this visit. We had a one hour guided bus tour of the grounds.

West Point Chapel, Friday, July 2

The chapel was especially beautiful. It houses the largest pipe organ in the world.

New York City, Thursday, July 1

New York City, here we come! We left the campground at 8:00 this morning in a van with Curt, Yvonne and 6 others for a 10+ hour tour of the “City”. Our van driver was Al, a New York native and a great guide. He was so knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor.

Times Square, Thursday, July 1

We crossed the Hudson River over the George Washington Bridge, drove through Manhattan, saw the locale where Sully landed the airliner, and were even fortunate to see the largest cruise ship in the world as it was coming in to dock. We viewed all the famous streets and avenues (5th of course), drove past CBS, NBC and FOX and parked to spend time walking around Times Square.

Ground Zero, Thursday, July 1

The very sobering part of our day was to walk around “ground zero” where so many lost their lives at the hands of terrorists on 9/11/2001. We also visited St. Paul’s Chapel and St. Peter’s Church, the only two buildings within miles of the attack that sustained no damage…..not a stone dislodged, not a window broken.

Liberty State Park, New Jersey, Thursday, July 1

Al is such an expert, having taken folks like us on his tours for 30 years. He knows that there is most times, a short wait to board the ferry at Liberty State Park, New Jersey, as opposed to about 2 hours on the New York side.

Ellis Island, Thursday, July 1

The ferry took us first to Ellis Island, where beginning in 1892, immigrants from all over the world took their first steps toward becoming Americans. Today it is a memorial to all who all have made this nation their adopted home.
